The co-op
SMSA and University High School formed a co-op that began play in 2010. Previously, SMSA fielded a football team on its own from 1999 to 2009.
The Stadium
The home field for SMSA/University is Dillon Stadium, the site of many amateur and professional sporting games as well as some legendary concert performances. Opened in 1935 by the city of Hartford, the facility was known as Municipal Stadium and hosted many baseball games, including a team in the Greater Hartford Twilight League. In 1956, the facility was renamed Dillon Stadium to recognize 35 years of civic service by James H. Dillon, the Recreation Director in Hartford.
Two professional football teams, the Hartford Charter Oaks (1964-67) and Hartford Knights (1968-73), called Dillon Stadium home. The Knights won two league championships and had an undefeated season in 1973. The Connecticut Wildcats/Yankees of the American Soccer League (1973-75) was the state’s first major league soccer franchise and played at Dillon Stadium for three seasons. The Hartford Bicentennials of the North American Soccer League played here for two years (1975-76). Dillon Stadium has also been the host for women’s professional football with the Connecticut Crushers of the National Women’s Football Association and the New England NightMare, who joined the Women’s Football Alliance in 2010.
Legendary musical acts have entertained Connecticut fans at Dillon Stadium. The Rolling Stones performed here in 1966 and the Beach Boys twice held concerts here in 1966 and 1973. The Grateful Dead also held two concerts at Dillon in 1972 and 1974. Other noteworthy musical acts to play at Dillon Stadium included the Doors (August 1972), the Eagles (1972), Santana (August 1973), Deep Purple (August 1974), J. Geils Band with Humble Pie (July 1973), Allman Brothers (June 1973), Edgar Winter (August 1972), Alice Cooper (August 1972) Kiss (June 1979) and Yes (1972).
